HabitatNOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries) this week pledged $3.73 million to habitat restoration projects in Oregon and Washington, helping restore more than 1,800 acres benefitting threatened anadromous species.

Funny enough, the ol’ habitat underdog is seeing a resurgence in popularity as a key ingredient to rebuilding prolific populations of big steelhead, chinook, and coho salmon. As for the 160+ years of misinformation and billions of dollars spent on Pacific Northwest hatchery propagation, it’s been a resounding “Oops” and “Aw-shucks.”

“Without the right habitat, fish struggle to grow and reproduce, and that means smaller fish populations,” said Will Stelle, regional administrator for NOAA Fisheries’ Western Region. “These projects will increase fish habitat—providing the important feeding and breeding grounds they need to thrive.”

According to The Columbia Basin Bulletin, restoration efforts recently approved for funding include:

— Coastal Alaska, AK ($330,000)

— Puget Sound, WA, Whidbey Basin ($1.4 million)

— Smith Island, WA, Snohomish County  ($1 million)

— Tillamook Bay, OR, Tillamook County ($242,000)
