Rad Scout Earns Rare Badges

Scouts are totally making a comeback this summer thanks to this doofy kid (Jared Gilman) and Wes Anderson’s new movie Moonrise Kingdom—an epic tale of young lovers on the lam from the law and their parents. Real life Boy Scout Robert Raycraft, 18, has taken the scouting rep a step further by earning “rare badges” in areas such as bugling and flyfishing. According to the Boy Scouts of America, Raycraft officially reached badass status when he recently hit 132 merit badges.

“Bugling is pretty rare,” says Raycraft, a recent graduate of Riverton High School and an Eagle Scout with Troop 46 in Riverton, IL. “That was personally my hardest.”

The flyfishing badge is no joke either. Here are a couple of highlights:

This shit is dangerous… Discuss the prevention of and treatment for health concerns that could occur while fly-fishing, including cuts and scratches, puncture wounds, insect bites, hypothermia, dehydration, heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and sunburn.

Lose points for being a douche… Tell how the Outdoor Code of the Boy Scouts of America relates to a fishing enthusiast, including the aspects of littering, trespassing, courteous behavior, and obeying fishing regulations.

And, impress prospective romantical interests by… Catching at least one fish and, if regulations and health concerns permit, cooking it.
