The DrakeCast #66: Mulberry Christmas w/ Freshwater Flats

On the morning of June 25th, my friend and guide Luke Annear swung by in his truck with his Towee in tow. When Luke isn’t pursuing his third post-graduate degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, you can usually find him chasing carp on the rivers of southern Wisconsin. Luke’s guide service, Freshwater Flats, specializes in site fishing opportunities for carp. But that day, we were trying something a little bit different.

“It’s Berry Christmas,” Luke informed me. “It’s six months after actual Christmas and again, the trees are decorated and there are presents under them.” Those presents being catfish and carp.

Across the country, in late June and early July, mulberry trees fruit, producing tasty berries enjoyed by humans, birds, and squirrels alike. If those mulberry tree are hanging over water, fish are able to enjoy the fruits of their bounty as well. So we set off in search of surface feeding bottom feeders. This episode is an exploration and celebration of abused and overlooked waters and the angling opportunities they contain. We hope you enjoy it.
