Who would believe that currently both Ranger Boats and the ESPN Network are sponsoring two redfish tournament circuits? Over the past five years, I’ve witnessed many of the latest inshore redfish techniques being practiced between Rockport and Jacksonville. Funny, using “never fail” Louisiana artificials in Central Florida coastal rivers works just as poorly as some of my favorite Florida patterns do in Texas. Go figure.

My latest study involves intermittent observations of a once-tiny red that migrated to a family aquarium after making a surprise appearance in my friend’s cast net. I call this red Buster because he rules the tank. When approached with a pack of frozen shrimp chunks, Buster blocks out Snooky, the older and larger lineside, and Groupy, a quick-finned grouper, and he continues gorging even after shrimp pieces are protruding from all sides of his mouth.
