How many times have we shook our head and said "Fucking Drake" in wonder at the good things that happen as a result of the friendships made on this silly message board? I've had the opportunity to fish in great places, made great friends and had other extreme kindnesses exteded from folks there. The day after Thanksgiving, returning from a fishing trip I was in an accident and my old skiff got destroyed. 3 days later I get a response to a weeks old email from Rootwad, and he mentions he's selling his skiff... Long story short, and as the result of Rootwad giving me a hell of a deal and Thalweg being about the best guy on the planet in facilitating a bunch of stuff, including towing a boat from Islamorada to Louisiana, I've now got what is pretty much my dream skiff. Thalweg it was great to finally meet you in person, can't wait until we share a boat ride. I also got to break the skiff in with a couple of Drakians yesterday as well, Ruddy Duck and Laflygun. Fucking Drake indeed. Oh and I posted this on teh suk fagbook page too, but since this place iw what made it happened, it gets a post here too.

To make Ron's short story long (because he's so damn humble).....

Ron's been thinking of upgrading his old Carolina Skiff to an extreme tactical technical poling skiff. Anybody that knows Ron or has fished with him knows how damn fishy he and his Carolina Skiff is. It makes it kinda hard to fix what's already working for you. Well, as shown above, Ron's new skiff plans got fast forwarded immensely after a month or so ago.

Some pretty awesome stars had to align to get us to this point, but as so many people said, there is NO ONE more deserving of this perfect situation than Ron. Countless people have been helped, "guided" and hosted by Ron. Anyone that has met Ron, knows that he is one of the best people on this damn Earth and deserved everything he got out of this transaction.

When I got invited to accompany the inaugural trip, there was no way I was going to miss it. It was good meeting Thalweg, and catching up with Ron once again.

It was no coincidence that the weather for Sunday was damn near perfect.

It was also no coincidence that the first fish over the gunnels in Louisiana water was a decent sized bull.

From all of the ins and outs to get the deal to happen all the way to the baptism in Louisiana waters, this proved that not only do good things happen to good people and indeed there is a power of the fuckin Drake.

although I had nothing to do with this drug deal, it warms my cockles that I know all parties involved. Fuckin' Drake. :smile

Ron, you'll need to start saving pennies, your fuel bill may go up some with that 70....

Based on what I saw yesterday it drinks about twice the fuel of my old rig, but that still isn't bad, the old 25 just didn't burn any gas. Looks like I'm getting around 4.7 MPG now, and I should be able to improve that a little as I figure ou the sweet spots on trimming it out.

I don't know if WOT with three fat guys in the boat should generate any reliable metrics on fuel efficiency. :wink

When I got wind of the super secret acquisition/delivery plan, I immediately invited myself to the christening. Like Costanza bringing sandwiches, I secured local lodging from a friend and promised to make good ballast. Deal was done.

Meeting Thal was a pleasure. What a generous and positive human being.

The boat of course was beautiful. It attracted huge flyfishermen at the boat ramp like moths to a flame. Ron better get used to that. Perhaps budget an extra 15 minutes at the launch.

The fishings was good, but we did have to work for them. I did fear that Corey and I were capable of wiping any good mojo clean off the boat in a single day, but in the end we held our own.

I can barely spell "bull" this year, but Corey seems to have a horseshoe up his ass this winter. He put the first fish over the gunwale, and it was impressive. A few more reds, and a black I didn't deserve rounded out the day. I'm sure some of the below are repeats.

Suck it Corey.

I've got to say that Root was awesome about the whole thing. With him being where he is, the boat being in Fla and Me being in Louisiana it took some maneuvering and some trust on his part, plus some help from Thalweg. The way it happened is kind of funny. A week or two before Thanksgiving I was farting around online and listened to April Vokey interview Root on her podcast. I dropped him and email just to let him know that it was good to hear his gravely old voice and to see how he was doing. Root being root didn't reply until 4 days after Thanksgiving, which was right after my accident. And BTW Roots slow response isn't from lack of decorum or manners, he's just not a big internet/email kind of guy. So, timing was perfect, I knew the boat and had seen Roots routine of care for it so I knew it was a cream puff so I was happy to make the deal without having to go see the boat again.

Brett and Corey, it was great having you guys in the boat, and I'm sorta OK with Corey being the first to get Louisiana Fish Slime on it. We'll do it again.
